Got a chance to fly a Lancair Legacy 2000 recently. 310 HP IO-550 Continental, glass panel... Never having flown a glass panel or a plane this quick, it was exciting. We climbed out at 180+ KIA and leveled off at 230 KIA. Yea baby, I feel the need for speed. Throttled back a bit and did some 3G steep turns left and right... hit a few little bumps and the tail twitched back and forth like a pike after a minnow. Fly this bird with a couple finger tips or be chasing after it big time, not like flying the Piper Arrow at KPEO. A great lesson in point perspective!

BravoZulu on "Flight training in Experimental Aircraft"

I did a fair bit of research about this, including a call to the EAA. The regulations do not specify primary flight training. The issue is the 'for compensation or hire'. Transition training happens via a FAA waiver from this regulation. Primary flight instruction can be given in the experimental aircraft if the funding for the aircraft comes from elsewhere. For example the Build to Fly project could offer the plane for free (or for 'build time credits') but charge for the flight instruction.

It seems that we'll need educational approval anyway, so a mute point. After bouncing the idea off the local EAA chapter, it seams Build to Fly is a name that gets our mission out in the name. Short, sweet and catchy.

I think you cannot give primary flight training in experimental aircraft. Definitely not for hire. But you can give transition training in experimental aircraft and you can do it for hire. Presumably for builders who want to learn to fly their own aircraft.

There may be a loophole for people who are building/ contributed to he building of an aircraft.

Before you sign up students who hope to end up learnign to fly in the airplane, you should find out exactly how this could work.

How about a list of words that may be combined to form a title like : Dream, Fly, Soar, Rivets, Aluminium, Students, Study, Skills, Workshop, Building, Constructing, Assembling, Teaching, Training, Program, Aviation, etc etc

And then combine them in a way that tells a story: 1- Dream,Build and Fly 2- Students Build and Fly 3- Student Built to Fly 4-Study Build and Fly, Aircraft Building Classroom, Build and Soar, Learn to Build and Fly, Building Classroom, Rivet and Fly, Rivet to Fly, Dream Rivet and Fly. etc etc etc

So, my goal this week is to file the articles of incorporation for my non-profit educational build a Sonex idea. I need to pick a name though first. I was thinking 'build to fly'. Anything involving standard terms like 'education' in the title, requires approval of the NYS dept. of Education, which is a pain, and i'd love to avoid it.

Let me know what y'all think.
